What is waste heat recovery ?

Every industrial process generates heat that it does not consume: hot flue gases, cooling water, unrecovered steam. This residual heat, known as waste heat, is released into the environment without being used. Yet it represents a thermal resource that you can harness directly on site.

Recovering it means capturing it before it is dissipated and reusing it where it is needed: supplying a district heating network, preheating process water, or heating industrial buildings.

How can waste heat from industrial processes be recovered?

Heat is captured at source via heat exchangers installed on industrial flue gases, cooling circuits or process effluents. It is then transported by hot water, hot air, steam or thermal oil, to the point of use.

Depending on the available temperature and the end customer’s requirements, the system may incorporate:

  • a heat pump, to raise the temperature of the waste heat to the required level,
  • a thermal storage tank, to balance out fluctuations between production and consumption,
  • a direct connection to a district heating network or another process on site, without any further conversion.

Who can make the most of their waste heat?

The sites most likely to benefit are those whose processes operate continuously and generate waste heat at temperatures ranging from 20°C to 300°C: food processing, malting, paper manufacturing, cement production, glass manufacturing, chemicals, metallurgy, data centres, wastewater treatment, etc.

The recovered heat can be used on-site by the industrial operator itself, or supplied to a nearby district heating network.
