Project summary
The DECARBOMALT project aims to build a solar thermal plant in Croatia, integrating heat pumps and an inter-seasonal storage system. This infrastructure will provide a renewable heat source to a malting plant, thus contributing to the decarbonization of the industrial sector.
Innovative in its scale, this project combines these technologies on such a scale for the first time, covering more than 80% of the industrial site’s heating needs while guaranteeing a competitive price.
DECARBOMALT is co-financed by the European Commission’s Innovation Fund , one of the world’s largest funding programs (€40 billion over 2020-2030) for the demonstration of innovative low-carbon technologies.

Principle of technology integration
The solar thermal plant, combined with a storage tank, a waste heat recovery system and two types of heat pump, will preheat the air used to dry the malt.
